Why MyUniTutor?

A short message from our founders, Jacob and Hugo:

Tutoring is not a revolutionary idea. However, the same disconnect that exists in schools between an older teacher and a young pupil is still very much prevalent. Our eyes were opened to the idea of student-led teaching by a scheme we participated in at school, and formed the basis of the idea to found MyUniTutor.

Our aim at MyUniTutor is to transform students’ academic journeys by using both relatable methods of teaching carried out by 1st and 2nd year University Students, all of whom are both incredibly successful academically and excellent mentors. We wanted to channel our passion for teaching into a comprehensive platform to champion aspiring, intelligent, young people. We saw an increasingly large void between pupils and teachers coming out of secondary school, and wanted to find a way to connect student role models to current pupils.

This all begs the question, if children struggle in school being taught by trained professionals, how transformative an impact can a university student have, especially from across a screen? We think, a monumental one. Being taught by someone who you can relate to correlates directly with increasing academic achievement. It is also important for a student to see content being explained in a student-friendly manner coming from someone who has learnt similar material in the same way. Not only have all of our tutors sat the examinations themselves, but they understand fully the concerns pupils may have, having been in that same environment themselves, albeit a few years earlier. At MyUniTutor, our tutors are not just teachers. They are selectively handpicked role models.
